On 21st February the 4th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division left the Cavalry Barracks in Ypres and moved to the front line into a new set of trenches to the south of Ypres where they stayed, in very wet conditions, for two days and nights. The battalion diary reports that there were many dead bodies lying around and that they buried dozens of them and that German fire resulted in a number of casualties on the first night. On 22nd February there were several more casualties from German rifle fire one of whom was James Woollard.
